Expansion of American Eagle airline service between Santa Fe and Dallas/Fort Worth takes off this weekend.

Starting Friday, a new early departure — leaving Santa Fe Municipal Airport at 8:15 a.m. and arriving at DFW at 10:55 a.m. local time — is expected to prove especially popular with businesspeople looking to make connections for flights to the East Coast and elsewhere, Santa Fe airport manager Jim Montman said.

“I’ve checked on the flight,” he said, “and it appears to have been full for quite some time.”

Starting Thursday, an evening flight from the American Airlines hub at DFW will also make it easier for westbound passengers to reach Santa Fe. The flight will depart DFW at 7:40 p.m. and arrive in Santa Fe at 8:30 p.m. local time. The crew overnights in Santa Fe and then makes the early flight back to DFW.

The expanded service, which was announced in mid-December, will use the same 44-seat Embraer ERJ-140 regional jets that provide American Eagle’s other three daily flights in and out of Santa Fe.

Fares are affected by how far in advance you book. A check of the airline Web site on Tuesday evening showed that a last-minute booking for a roundtrip departing Santa Fe early Friday and returning from Dallas on Sunday evening would cost about $599. A similar itinerary in late March was available for about $403.

Valerie Alarid, officer manager of Wings Travel, said American Eagle is becoming more popular with her clients as the airline adds more flights.

“We have clients who want to leave the East Coast in the afternoon,” she said. “With this new flight (leaving Dallas at 7:40 p.m.), they can be back in Santa Fe the same day.”

Alarid also said American Eagle’s daily connection with Los Angeles is “nice for clients who are traveling to Asia. I think it will become more and more popular.”

The start of the third daily link between Dallas and Santa Fe comes as the embattled airline industry begins to show some signs of life.

On Tuesday, shares of U.S. airlines rose strongly after United, one of the largest, reported strong January traffic. According to Reuters, United said earlier in the week that its unit revenue from its planes rose between 9.5 percent and 11.5 percent for January.

Other major airlines’ shares were also higher, with American Airlines rising 9.3 percent.

“If unit revenues are rising at United, that’s generally an indication that demand is improving in general,” Standard & Poors analyst Jim Corridore told Reuters.

American Eagle flights to and from Santa Fe resulted in 19,653 enplanements and deplanements during the last seven months of 2009, which works out to an average of little more than 2,800 a month.

The number that is expected to grow as service expands and more travelers become familiar with the alternative to using Albuquerque International Sunport. During the first month of 2010, there were 4,634 enplanements and deplanements in Santa Fe.

Montman said the connections with DFW are the most popular flights, while the lilnk with LAX in Los Angeles is “coming along.”

American Eagle was forced to cancel a number of flights because of the recent stormy weather, Montman said.

Load factors, which give an accurate indication of how heavily particular flights are booked, aren’t made public, airline spokeswoman Andrea Huguely said. However, she said, “They are meeting expectations.”

Montman and Simon Brackley, president of the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce, both expect heavier traffic as warmer weather approaches.

“All of this has been happening in the slowest part of the season,” Brackley said. “As spring and summer comes along, we anticipate even more growth. We would like to see other airlines as well.”

Delta Air Lines in mid-2007 said it also planned to offer regional jet service here, linking Santa Fe with Salt Lake City and Los Angeles, but later decided not to proceed with the plan because market conditions appeared not to warrant it.

As for Santa Fe’s efforts to bring other carriers to Santa Fe, Montman said this week, “We are talking to other airlines, but nothing is confirmed.”

The village of El Rito, one of the first Spanish settlements in New Mexico, is located on Hwy 554 with close access to Espanola, Ojo Caliente, and Abiquiu. It is offers breath taking views of the Sangre de Cristos, Jemez Mountains, and the La Madera Mountains. El Rito’s quiet quaintness stimulates artistic talents evidenced by the number of artists in the area. The artists produce Spanish colonial furniture, pottery, fine art photography, handmade papers, handwoven textiles, traditional and contemporary tin art, retablos and santos, fine micaceous pottery, quilts and textiles, fine jewelry, and hand forged iron works. An annual studio tour brings many people to enjoy El Rito. The people who visit for the studio tour usually end up owning a piece of El Rito Real Estate.

History abounds in El Rito. San Juan Nepomucene Catholic Church, one of the first churches in NM, was restored in the 1980’s. Peter Van Dresser, author, architect, and builder, was one of the first to develop passive solar homes. If you want to stimulate your mind you’ll find opportunities right next door. Northern New Mexico College exists on the campus of the Spanish American Normal School in El Rito which was established in the early 1900s to train teachers for the state’s Spanish speaking population when New Mexico was still a Territory. When New Mexico became a state in 1912, the school was identified as one of ten educational institutions to be supported by the state. Through the years it has offered secondary, technical vocational and more recently four year college degrees. In the 1980’s a certification program was established for the Elisabeth Kubler-Ross Hospice Training Program which gave health care providers much needed expertise in dealing with death and dying.

Nothing compares to the sounds of a babbling brook. El Rito Creek runs through the village providing water for irrigation for the farms and ranches as well as a place for wading children to frolic in the summer. Some of the most beautiful El Rito homes for sale are along the El Rito Creek. El Rito land for sale bordering the National Forest is a special treat for the outdoor enthusiast. One of five National Forests in New Mexico, Carson National Forest offers up some of the finest mountain scenery in the Southwest. Ranging in elevation from 6,000 feet to 13,161 feet at Wheeler Peak, the highest vantage point in New Mexico. Scattered throughout the property you will find the state tree of New Mexico, the Pinon. The trees vary in height from 10-30 feet. The tiny pine nuts were discovered as tasty food by the prehistoric Natives and Spanish when they came to New Mexico more than 400 years ago. Along side the Pinon are High Mountain Cottonwood, Sage Brush, Juniper, Willow and many other varities of floral providing a rare treat in this arid Southwest climate. Unobstructed views of the Sangre’s across the Rio Grande Valley take your breath away.

Traveling a few miles up Angel Canyon along El Rito Creek you will be surrounded by aspens, pine, fir and spruce and may see deer, elk ,or even a bear. At an elevation of 6900 feet the summers are cool. You can play in the snow in the winter, snowshoe down to El Farolito for a world renown green chile burrito, spicy salsa, and a cup of steaming hot chocolate flavored with cinnamon.

It is often difficult to find El Rito homes for sale that are situated alongside a creek with the lushness that this estate offers. El Rito Real Estate varies from the limited availability of raw land to the popular double adobe homes in need of renovation. This estate has been tastefully updated and awaits it’s new caretaker!

Aldea is one of the Santa Fe neighborhoods that have experienced a boom in the last few years of home ownership. The large number homeowners who have taken advantage of this buyers market in Aldea have done so either as full time residents, or as part time residents by purchasing a second or third home with the hope of retiring in the next three, five or ten years and who did not want to miss out in this extraordinary buying opportunity.

The many buyers enjoying life in Santa Fe and that we have sold homes to, have expressed to us their primary reasoning for purchasing in Aldea was the sense of community present in this neighborhood as well as pride of home ownership. Other factors in purchasing in this community that remain high on their lists was the diversity in product that Aldea had to offer such as town homes, garden homes, single family homes as well as estate homes too.

One such estate home that is currently available for purchase is the property located at 6 Calle Siete Casas in Aldea. Old World finishes and dramatic spaces grace this sophisticated and prestigious home. For the buyer who enjoys expansive mountain views or prefers to have a private guest suite to share with others, this home has the best of everything Santa Fe has to offer. For the savvy buyer who doesn’t want to be left in the dust as the next housing upswing occurs or for more information on this property CLICK HERE.

For several reasons, many buyers have chosen to call Rancho Viejo home.
